PAST SUCCESSES
Dr. Pattisapu was instrumental in the development of the Percutaneous Endoscopic Recanalization of a Catheter (PERC) procedure.
This clinical procedure has reduced the number of open shunt revisions necessary to maintain correct shunt operation when dealing with proximal shunt malfunctions. Although ventricular peritoneal shunts have a five-year failure rate, higher than many other implanted medical devices, they remain the primary treatment for hydrocephalus.
The “PERC” procedure is an alternative (less invasive) approach to the open surgical procedures for correcting proximal ventricular catheter occlusion. This procedure was developed by Dr. Pattisapu with the hope that permanent shunt patency be maintained using this technique. The result is a procedure that offers long lasting shunt function without the risks of open surgical procedures.
