MEET OUR KIDS
OK Parents, here’s your time to shine. As part of our website we will be giving proper credit to the “superstar” children we treat. We hope that this showcase both excites your children, and helps provide motivation to other families out there who are going down this difficult road for the first time.
If parents wish, they will be able to provide their e-mail address so that
other parents can reach out with questions, or to simply congratulate you on
being such a wonderful Mom or Dad!
RYAN’S STORY
Ryan is 17 years old and developed hydrocephalus secondary to meningitis
when he was 3 months old which required placement of a shunt. Remarkably,
Ryan had no problems with his shunt until he was 14 years old and started
having terrible headaches which were a sign of his shunt malfucntioning. He
needed a shunt revision. Four months later his body rejected the shunt
and he needed another revision. A month later that shunt failed and
Ryan had yet another shunt revision. One month later Ryan spent his
15th birthday having another shunt revision. On Ryan's 16th birthday,
he was back in the hospital having another shunt revision. Three months
before Ryan's 17th birthday he was back in the hospital with a malfunctioning
shunt and had yet another revision. Unfortunately, he developed a shunt
infection and needed another revision less than one month later. Ryan
spent another month in the hospital on IV antibiotics until his infection
cleared and had a long and difficult recovery.
Ryan is just like any
other teenage boy, wanting to drive Mom's car and hang out with his friends. Ryan's
wish for 2008 is to be able to celebrate his 18th birthday at home, and not
at the hospital.
