MEET OUR KIDS
OK Parents, here’s your time to shine. As part of our website we will be giving proper credit to the “superstar” children we treat. We hope that this showcase both excites your children, and helps provide motivation to other families out there who are going down this difficult road for the first time.
If parents wish, they will be able to provide their e-mail address so that
other parents can reach out with questions, or to simply congratulate you on
being such a wonderful Mom or Dad!
CHASE’S STORY
Chase is 16 years old and would like to play football, but because he has
hydrocephalus and a shunt, that is not a possibility. So, Chase
has decided to become the best golfer he can be. Chase is bright, alert,
and still manages to smile even though he still suffers with chronic headaches
and has many battle scars from multiple surgeries.
When Chase was just 4 months
old, his parents noticed he was irritable and his fontanelle was full. Chase
was diagnosed with hydrocephalus caused by aqueductal stenosis and he received
his first shunt. Sadly, Chase has had too many shunt surgeries to list
them all individually. He had 6 shunt revisions before he was 2 years old. The
year 2000 was not a good year for Chase either because he had another 5 surgeries,
and ended up with a left and right shunt. In 2003 Chase underwent Chiari
Decompression and yet another shunt revision due to chronic headaches and
lethargy. Since then, Chase has underwent placement of ICP monitors,
shunt infections, even more revisions and a T-1 laminectomy and L-4, L-5 laminectomy
for CSF leak and dural repair. Chase has survived 44 surgeries and unfortunately
he will face more surgeries unless a better way to treat hydrocephalus is
discovered. Chase does not believe that a better shunt is the answer.
