THE INSTITUTE
The Hyrocephalus & Neuroscience Institute, Inc., is a non-profit organization founded by Jogi V. Pattisapu, MD, FAAP, FACS. It was formed to address the need for research of the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) system and, in particular, how the system malfunctions in hydrocephalus.
The need for this research cannot be overstated. Federal funds for this research are not available since the federal goverment feels that shunt technology, developed back in 1952, addresses the condition. As any family member of a child with hydrocephalus will tell you, a shunt is not a cure. It is a band-aid. Shunt malfunctions and infection are a reality. Many of the children with Hydrocephalus have as many as 40 brain surgeries before they reach the age of 18 due to necessary revisions to their shunt system. With each surgery there is the risk of hemorrhage, infection, and death.
A REAL CURE NEEDS TO BE FOUND!
Meaningful Hydrocephalus research has been poorly supported by NINDS. Dr. Pattisapu recognized this fact and has made finding the cure his life’s work. With the support of his wife and the families from his practice, he purchased start-up lab equipment and hired a full time research staff. The new lab opened at The University of Central Florida in September, 2005. Presently this facility is one of only three centers in the entire United States doing non-clinical research into this disorder.
Thanks to Dr. Pattisapu’s 20 years of experience and the Institute’s privately funded research, progress is being made. However, financial support is needed to help improve the lab’s resources and capabilities. The Institute’s continuing goal is to determine the best strategies for Hydrocephalus treatment and ultimatley to find a cure for this disorder that affects millions of children and adults worldwide.
The federal government has turned its back on these children... will you?
